During this spring’s annual NYCxDesign festival, held May 10–22, WantedDesign will take over two New York boroughs to showcase work from the international creative community.
The event kicks off at Brooklyn’s Industry City with an exhibition from the University of Oregon’s Product Design Program’s new branding and garment designs for Prison Blues, a brand of blue jeans and workwear sewn in a job training program for incarcerated men in Pendleton, Oregon. Also on tap is the IC Locals: Timber! exhibit, curated by Hannah Martin, senior design writer at Architectural Digest, which will feature pieces that are made in or are about wood. The show will feature work by Matthias Pliessnig, Egg Collective, Stephen Talasnik, Jason Miller, and the design brand Juniper. In addition, the College of Design and Innovation at Shanghai’s Tongji University presents projects that illustrate how contemporary jewelry and clothing can be spectacular, radical, critical, and conceptual, and act as a catalyst for collectively redefining people’s relationships within their communities.
On May 18 and 19, more than 100 art and maker studios in Industry City, including painters, photographers, sculptors, and woodworkers, will open their doors for tours and a chance to meet the artists and learn more about their craft. From May 18–20, the Craft in Focus Festival will offer workshops, master classes, and live demonstrations on techniques such as stained glass, violin-making, calligraffiti, robot-making, and stone-cutting.
WantedDesign’s Manhattan arm gets underway from May 18–21 at theTerminal Stores, which will showcase designers and brands including Caesarstone, ceramics designer Yuko Nishi Kawa, and the winner of WantedDesign’s American Design Honors 2019, Slash Projects. The space will also host the seventh-annual Launchpad event, which highlights up-and-coming furniture and lighting designers from around the globe.
