When the client first described their work as "unified by a consistently high standard of execution rather than a consistently recognizable style," it immediately resonated with our design team. This perspective spoke to our core philosophy — that exceptional design isn’t confined to a single aesthetic but rather defined by the quality and intention behind each detail. We were inspired by the challenge of creating spaces that feel cohesive through craftsmanship, function, and clever design. It became clear that our role would be to elevate the client’s vision with a refined, tailored approach that values versatility and precision. Their bold vision led them to purchase a 1960s industrial building in the heart of inner SE Portland, originally home to a candy distribution factory.

Our design team didn't just work for the client; we worked with them. Together, we transformed the dull two-story candy distribution office reminiscent of the movie Office Space into a warm, collaborative space.

The process was a true partnership, from understanding their needs by hosting in-depth programming sessions to presenting iterative design and material concepts. The result is a space that reflects the client's style and our shared vision and collaborative spirit.

In the early programming phase, the team chose three keywords to guide the process and decision-making: clever, collaborative, and serene.

When entering the building, a vertical white oak wood dowel screen separates the lounge area from the open workspace. This custom design element adds texture and privacy and is a recurring feature throughout the space.

Adjacent conference rooms each feature a white oak paneled wall with a TV and media components. The design team developed and detailed custom media cabinets to ensure that cords and components are neatly hidden yet easily accessible for a virtual meeting. This involved careful planning and coordination with the client to understand their specific needs and preferences, as well as working closely with the contractor to ensure the cabinets were seamlessly integrated into the design, providing a perfect balance of function and beauty.

Built-in arched bookshelves enclose the open work studio and provide a place to display sculptures, books, objects, and the firm's design awards on the path to the kitchen. The inspiration for these bookshelves came from the client's love for classic design elements and their desire to have a space that encourages creativity and showcases their achievements and interests.

An early programming requirement included a room that could work for the entire staff to have lunch together. The client envisioned hosting events and talks in the community within this room. The design team worked with the general contractor and our upholsterer to create four built-in white oak and leather booths. The booths repeat the vertical dowels from the entry, though this time, they are painted in dusty green. This detail repeats on the island in the kitchen and again in the lower level half-circle-shaped booths.

The original dark basement level, originally a candy storage room, was transformed into a cozy, warm lounge space with a custom-designed table for crafts and drawing and a bar for after-hours. Here, the team can break from their computer work for analog activities like sketching and life drawing classes. The design team envisioned two semi-circular seating nooks with leather seat cushions and wood dowel backs as a place to tuck into with a magazine or laptop.

Natural materials create unexpected design elements in the office restrooms, which feature warm terrazzo, lime-washed walls, and handmade Heath tile.
