Each week through January 2021, we will be rolling out two of our Editors’ Picks from GRAY Awards 2020.
Editors’ Pick: Standout Powder Room, Riverbend House
CLB Architects

The powder room in this Jackson, Wyoming House, designed by CLB Architects, is worth a double, or triple, take. Image by Matthew Millman.
On the banks of the Snake River in Jackson, Wyoming, CLB Architects designed a modern home that takes full advantage of picturesque views of the woody 20-acre property and out to the Teton mountain range beyond.
Naturally, the architects designed the structure with windows in every room to allow the clients and their guests unparallel peeks at nature no matter where they were in the home. Every room, except one: a compact powder room positioned on the ground level at the entry end of the building.
“The only windowless room in the house, the powder room reads as a tunnel,” writes CLB Architects in its entry. “[The] arched full-length mirrors indefinitely reflect the brass railroad tracks set in the floor, creating a dramatic trompe l’oeil tunnel effect.” When our editors first looked at pictures of this project they couldn’t stop talking about the bathroom, which seemed to go on and on and on. Oftentimes the powder room is treated as more or an afterthought. Maybe it will get some bold wallpaper or architectural hardware, but the real standout design moves are saved for more trafficked or visible spaces. This room hits the mark for surprise and delight with a whole lot of daring thrown in for good measure.
