Spotlight: Miss Lee, 2021 GRAY Awards Finalist

A closer look at Miss Lee, one of five finalists in the 2021 GRAY Awards Commercial Interior Design category.

Miss Lee, a new dining concept by the executive chef and team behind the Lee’s brand of restaurants (Lee Lo Mei & Lee Ho Sing), is a 100% vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free restaurant focused on giving visitors an option for plant-based food in an all-day dining bistro/cafe setting.

Designed by JJ Acuna/Bespoke Studio, the interiors take similar cues to Miss Lee’s menu: giving a slight nod to Hong Kong’s architectural past, while creating a fresh, new vision rooted in contemporary aesthetics. Anchored by a mix of earthy brown and beige tones (mostly seen in tile work upholstery) the dining room is kept modern with dusty pinks, mustard yellows, and bright greens chosen for their similarity to that found in the city’s historic Star Ferry boats and station structures.

A highlight of the project is the wall application of award-winning Volcanic Ash tiles, designed by London-based DZEK, in shades of brown and orange. The tiles are hand crafted and hand glazed in Italy. The inclusion of rattan chairs, designed by GamFratesi for the Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, anchors the spatial narrative to Hong Kong’s colonial past while keeping the space effortlessly casual, cozy, and light throughout the entire day.
