BOLD LOOKS FROM MORE THAN 75 DESIGNERS FROM 15 COUNTRIES ARE ABOUT TO MAKE AN APPEARANCE FOR THIS YEAR’S VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK (VDF), MARCH 19–25, AT DOWNTOWN’S DAVID LAM HALL. In its 31st season since 2001, VDW designers will present Fall/Winter 2018 collections amidst a healthy number of events and special showcases. To stand out from the pack, VDF makes a point in its messaging to highlight its diverse group of designers, spanning from Jamaica to Ghana, to Japan. This is encouraging, considering the persistent diversity problems that plague the U.S. and other fashion weeks in general. It’s nice to see a robust event that gives such a platform for up-and-coming designers.
GRAY has its eye on this year’s collections from Eros Tolentino, an Italian-born and based designer who offers minimalist designs with subtle avant-garde details, and whose work has been featured in Vogue Italiano and Cosmopolitan. Another star on the rise is experimental Chilean designer Maria Pia Cornejo. Her architecturally structured designs are turning heads all over the world. A brand new Vancouver-based designer, Melissa Yin, even recently showed at New York Fashion Week. Another Vancouver designer we’re loving is Ization Studio, with her minimal, billowy silhouettes.
